In the early 1990s, the Museum of Modern Art in New York decided to reframe Paul Cézanne’s The

Bather as well as Van Gogh’s Portrait of Joseph Roulin and The Starry Night. Looking to create newly designed frames that match the masterpieces’ splendor, MoMA’s Department of Painting and

Sculpture called upon Lowy with these major assignments.

For The Bather, we created a wide, pale, silvery frame with an almost sculptural quality that offered a perfect unity with the subject.

 

In the case of Van Gogh’s masterpieces, our team produced several prototypes until the Museum found the desired look. Attention to detail was so great so that the top of The Starry Night’s frame was finished differently from its sides and bottom to accommodatelighting in the MoMA gallery.
