James Maroney Inc.

Albert Bierstadt’s monumental “The Great Trees, Mariposa Grove, California” (1875-76) is no ordinary painting.  This breathtaking 10-foot by 5-foot view of Yosemite National Park, inspired by the great Hudson River School artist’s trips to the American West during the mid 19th century, is considered one of Bierstadt’s finest landscapes, boasting a long exhibition history and rich historical detail. (The small figure depicted at the base of  the giant tree is said to be Galen Clark, the first official guardian of Yosemite and Bierstadt’s guide.)  It is also distinguished by its massive scale.  But when it was acquired in 1977 by a New Hampshire collector it was missing a significant element: a frame equal to its majesty.

“This painting originally had a huge gorgeous frame, as depicted in a photograph from the period,” says Jay Maroney, an art dealer from Vermont and consultant to the New Hampshire collector.  “The original frame had been lost or destroyed over the years, and the painting wound up in a poor quality reproduction frame.   I advised my client to have a new frame made that would show off the painting to optimal effect.  And there was no  firm better suited to the challenge than Lowy.  They always deliver the highest quality products and service.”

Without a doubt, the team at Lowy is a big part of why our exhibitions look as good as they do.

- Howard Shaw, President and Director, Hammer Galleries

Hammer Galleries, headquartered in New York, focuses on Impressionist and Modern Masters and has been collaborating with Lowy for three generations. Howard Shaw, president and director of Hammer Galleries, notes that it has always been a headache-free relationship, in large part because working with Lowy means that no assignment is impossible.

In Fall 2015, Hammer Galleries launched their Matisse and Picasso exhibition, featuring exemplary selections from the two prominent modern masters. The exhibition displayed fabulous period frames from the Lowy collection—a testimony to a thriving relationship befitting the installation of an important showcase of two of the most prominent cultural icons of their time.

I began working with Lowy in 1972 as director of American paintings for M. Knoedler and Company, who

had relied on Lowy for conservation and framing for decades. I am still working with Lowy after all these

years, which says it all.

- Deedee Wigmore, President, D. Wigmore Fine Art

D. Wigmore Fine Art, located in Midtown Manhattan, specializes in the major historic styles of American art.

In Spring 2015, the gallery exhibited the first retrospective for American Op artist Tadasky (b.1935, Tadasuke Kuwayama). lt featured 30 carefully selected paintings across five decades, showing the immense variety Tadasky achieved with his circle compositions through color, line, and texture.

D. Wigmore had Lowy perform all conservation and framing for this exhibition. The results appropriately conveyed the inventiveness and elegance of Tadasky’s timeless circle compositions that represent a shift from painting as object to experience.
