Painter and sculptor Manolo Valdés draws heavily upon his Spanish artistic heritage, but also references other masters, including Rembrandt, Rubens, and Matisse, creating an intellectual twist that brings significant historical works out of their original context.

Valdés is passionate about the design and surfaces of the frames he chooses. We recently made a pair of traditional 17th-century frames—akin to frames one would see on a Velasquez—as mirrors to face each other in a room housing one of Valdés’ monumental Las Meninas, also created in homage to Velasquez. The mirrors speak to the influence Velasquez and Picasso have had on Valdés’ work. When one enters the room, one feels the Spanish heritage in the view of the Menina from the surrounding framed mirrors.
